Message from the President

As we near the end of the first semester of the school year,I hope this newsletter finds everyone in good health. It was so nice to see so many of you at our 48th annual conference! I believe that I can speak for the IDEA board when I say that the conference was once again a huge success! Thank you again to all of our presenters for volunteering your time to speak at the conference. Congratulations goes out to Dave Ball of Waubonsee Community College who was the recipient of the "R. Tim Phillips Teacher of the Year" award for his dynamic teaching and service in the field of drafting education. Also, a congratulations goes to IMAGINiT Technologies who won the "Vendor of the Year" award. IMAGNiT has been a loyal sponsor of the IDEA for many years.

.

I would like to say goodbye and thank you to Howard Miller for his years of service as Financial Director. He has done an outstanding job of keeping this organization financially stable. Howard, I will miss your great one-liners at the board meetings. I would also like to thank Dr. Chris Merrill for all of his hard work as Assistant Competition Director. He has been a great liaison for the IDEA and Illinois State University for the State Competition.

I want to welcome Mr. Gary Hatfield from Washington Community High School who has volunteered as our Member-at-large and Dr. Tina Ye from the College of Lake County who will be our new Financial Director. The board welcomes you and we look forward to working with both of you!

There are two gentlemen who have done so much for us that words cannot fully express how thankful the IDEA is for their assistance. Their hard work and dedication to this great organization has kept the lines of communication open between all of our members. The first is John Connolly, who is our Executive Secretary and person responsible for putting every newsletter together. The second is Mark Schwendau, who has done an oustanding job with the IDEA website. Also, please remember that this is the last hard copy of our "On the Board" newsletter. Starting in the spring the newsletter will be posted on the IDEA website (www.IDEA-Online.org).

In closing, I look forward to this year and the opportunity to serve as the President of the IDEA. I will do whatever I can to keep this organization as strong as possible, but I would like help from all our members. If any member has input on how we can make this already great organization better, I would love to hear it. Always feel free to e-mail me ( kkoeppen@d155.org) and please remember that the strength of this organization is dependent on all of us!

Our website has become more and more the central focus of our organization and I find that very exciting! The money and manhours the Internet can save the IDEA is thought provoking. I want to thank those board members, and some of our many volunteer assistants, who are pushing us in this new direction.

Because of the changes made recently, competition materials and newsletter going online, we have had to purchase an additional 50 megabytes of drive space from our internet service provider. Even with 100 Mb's, we will not be able to archive all the future online editions of "On the Board". These files in Adobe PDF file format are just too large. For this reason I will continue to keep this News page updated as those using dial up modems might not want to take the time to download the newsletter.

For those who do have fast connections, a new button is now located on the bottom of our IDEA home page to grab the attention of visitors to our site and allow them to rapidly see our organization's newsletter. We want to promote our sponsoring vendors as much as we can and our newsletter does a great job of that. Similarly, a new button is on the home page to encourage memberhsip and bolster our numbers.

Once again, it was bitter-sweet seeing so many in Bloomington-Normal. Bitter in that I notice each time we gather we seem to be graying. What is up with that? Sweet in that the brotherhood and bond between us remains so strong. God bless!

Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
