Message from the President

I would like to thank all those committed teachers and professionals who took time out of their already busy schedules to attend and contribute to the 47th Annual Fall IDEA Conference. I hope the speakers, vendors and facilities satisfied your needs.

There is some good news and bad news concerning the IDEA, first the good news. I appreciated the excellent Thursday CAD Users Group at Illinois State University lead by Dr. Ryan Brown, Dr. Chris Merrill and Mark Anderson. I give credit to Chip Finck and Kevin Koeppen for making the Friday workshop at Heartland Community College a great success. A great big thanks goes to John Connolly for his fantastic work publishing the "On the Board" newsletter. We are attempting to deliver the newsletter electronically to the membership. I also recognized Howard Miller for diligently keeping track of all the finances. Bull Kolton, Dr. Brown, Dr. Merrill and Mike Soehn are working real hard on the upcoming competition in March.

Congratulations to Goodheart-Willcox Publisher as our 2004 Vendor of the Year and thanks to Jeanette Walsh for her years of faithful support to this organization. Please remember to support our vendors throughout the year. Those also present at the Fall Conference were Aidex Coporation, Imaginit Technologies, JBH Technologies, Inc., Morrison Institute of Technology and Pearson Prentice Hall. Keep up the great work!

Now the bad news! I am also frustrated in having to announce we do not have a Secretary. The teacher elected at the annual meeting had showed interest but had not officially accpted to serve. There was a miscommunication predicament on the part of the IDEA executive board side not the instructor's. I accept full responsibility for the mix-up, and apologize to the nominee and the full membership for this error.

Wait a minute, breaking news! I am now elated to announce we now do have a new individual that has volunteered for the Secretary position. He is Randy Jacobs, a part-time instructor at Heartland Community College in Normal. Randy has been utilized as a judge in at the State IDEA contest for years and was CAD Users Group Chairman from 1997-2000. Thanks, Randy, for stepping forward! But, members start talking to people now and contact Chip or myself for next year's Board Member-at-Large and Financial Director, since Howard Miller is retiring. If there is anybody that is interested in the Financial Director position, contact me ASAP so you can job-shadow Howard this year. We must get some new young blood on the executive board. We can't keep re-treading older past officers like Howard Miller, Bill Kolton, Mike Soehn and myself, to keep this organization going. It is not that I don't appreciate all the work these "older guys" are doing; they are really working hard and committed to the IDEA. I do recognize the value of the younger guys we do have on the board like Chip, Kevin, Jesse, John and Chris.

In addition, I am disappointed that with all the excellent drafting/CAD instructors in the state of Illinois, nobody was nominated for the R. Tim Phillips Award for Excellence in Drafting Education. Hopefully we can give out an award next year. Recently I received one deserving nomination for 2005 already.

Furthermore, I am discouraged with the small turnout at the workshop. We must get the newer and younger drafting/CAD instructors to join the IDEA and get involved with the conference and not just the competition.

.

Now we must end on some good news! A new Curriculum Committee was formed at the Fall Conference co-chaired by Mike Morgan (Lewis & Clark Community College) and Shauna Scribner (Southwestern Illinois College). I think five others have agreed to help serve. This committee will research current Illinois standards for archi- tecture and machine drafting, establish educational goals, construct a tentative outline for an "IDEA 101 Basic Drafting" course and inquire about course accreditation. The IDEA board will monitor the committee's progress and inform the membership.

I would like to thank Mark Schwendau for his continued maintenance of the IDEA web site. Vist the web site at www.IDEA-Online.org. Any suggestions on how else we can use the website, contact Mark on the website.

Any ideas, questions, suggestions, or complaints, please contact me. This is your organization and I am a servant to you.

I share in the observed highs and lows of our IDEA president! I love the brotherhood of our professional organization and I wish my feelings were more contagious with the youth of our profession.

I was recently contacted by H. Ross Perot aid Libby Craft of The Perot Group, hence the picture atop this page. Ms. Craft found me via our website. She contacted us with the hope we could help Mr. Perot find a missing piece of drafting equipment from his 1953 Navy Academy drafting set he intends to give to his grandson as a family heirloom. Mr. Perot was looking for a 30/60 degree angular Braddock-Rowe type "B" lettering guide but has since found one. Mr. Perot is best known as the Texas billionaire who mounted two unsuccessful presidential bids as an independent, first in 1992 then in 1996.

Go us!

Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
