| Hello and greetings to all. On behalf of the Illinois Drafting Educator's Association I would like to say thank you to all those dedicated teachers and professionals who attended and participated in the 45th Annual Fall Workshop. This year's conference marked a significant change of venue moving to the facilities at Heartland Community College where the response of our participants was overwhelmingly positive.

I'd like to thank all of those who helped make this conference a huge success. A special thanks goes to the 2002 President, Mike Morgan, who was the key player in making our Heartland change possible and for his leadership of the organization the past year. Mike has not only displayed excellent leadership but he has also emitted a passion for the craft that is very catching. I speak from personal experience. To Mark Anderson, Ryan Brown and Chris Merrill who orchestrated an awesome Thursday workshop. To Bob DeVries, our Past President, whose leadership and dedication will leave a lasting impression on the organization. To Chip Finck, our Secretary, whose attention to detail exemplifies what this organization is all about. And, finally, a word of thanks to Howard Miller, our Financial Director, who juggles our change. His supreme organizational skills are the backbone of our success as an organization.
| |
Once again, I would like to thank Mark Schwendau for his much appreciated work as he continues to maintain our organization's web site. Please give it a look and utilize it (www.IDEA-Online.org). Mark does a great job of keeping it current with the conference and contest information.
| |
Congratulations to J.C. Malitzke of Moraine Valley Community College for being awarded the 2002 R. Tim Phillip Award for Excellence in Drafting Education. J.C. has served in the organization in many ways but he is most well known for his energy, dedication, and willingness to educate others in the drafting field. Also, congratulations to the Aidex Corporation for their 2002 Vendor of the Year Award. Aidex has been a great support to the organzation over the years. Please remember to support our vendors.
| |
I'd like to take this time to welcome Mark DeJaranatt from Washington Community High School who will be stepping in as our new secretary and Janice Drosopoulos from Morrison Institute of Technology as our new member-at-alrge.

The 45th Workshop was, in my opinion, a great success seeing new faces in participants and speakers... We saw a wide variety of topics presented with positive responses from the members. J.C. Malitzke, as always, put on a great presentation on AutoCAD's Internet capabilities. Those who attended the Bartels' presentation on Plotting and "Tips and Tricks" were very pleased. Is there anything these guys don't know about AutoCAD and computers? Jim Dicker put on an informative and inspiring presentation on UWM's architectural program. Gil Gamez of Westwood College presented a very visually interesting display of student work from his college. I would also like to thank Chip Finck and John Connolly for their well prepared and delivered presentation on 3D Studio Max and animation.
| |
As I close, I would like to again say thanks to all who organized and participated in the 45th Annual Illinois Drafting Educator's Association Fall Conference and to John Connolly who is responsible for publishing and sending this quarterly newsletter. This is a unique and strong organization, and I look forward to serving as President this coming year.

Our numbers are a little down from last year but some regions went up. I offer this for your inspection, thoughts and future comments.

My news is much the same as the last issue with one new item; I have been asked to present a white paper to the Illinois Online Conference (IOC) titled, "The Technology Behind the www.IDEA-Online.org Web Site". My presentation will focus on how we use the Internet to view 2-d and 3-d drawings in dwf and wrl file formats.

We have a new experimental post-secondary design contest posted on the CONTESTS page we would like community college educators to review.
| |
Also, for those using the newer version of America On Line Instant Messaging, we have a drafting related buddy icon you can load into your Instant Messenger that will come up on the person's screen you are conversing with. The icon is at the top of this page and may be downloaded to your computer via right clicking your mouse button and saving it to your AOL-IM directory where it can be configured via the Setup menu where you select a buddy icon. | Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
