Message from the President

Once again, the IDEA High School Drafting Contest was a great success. The 27th annual event was held at Illinois State University on April 17, 2004 in Turner Hall. There were a promising number of entrants that qualified and attended this year's contest. In all, 962 students from 6 divisions and 19 regions across the state competed. One hundred and ninety six students competed at the state level where 36 placed. In addition to our regular divisions, a Solid Modeling division was test piloted.

This year we saw the following entries: 128 Intro. Board, 237 Intro. CAD, 79 Machine Board, 194 Machine CAD, 94 Architectural Board and 230 Architectural CAD. This year we did see a drop in numbers in all divisions except for the Architectural CAD division. We, as a board, encourage you to let other teachers know of this great experience and encourage others to participate. You, our membership, are our greatest resource.

Also, a great deal of thanks goes to our Competition Director, Dick Johannsen, who year-after-year puts out a tremendous effort to see that the contest runs smoothly. For the past several years Dick has worked on refining the competition and ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Dick is stepping down from the Competition Director position after several great years of service. Dick will be missed. Bill Kolton will be stepping into Dick's shoes as Competition Director for next year. We look forward to what Bill brings to the table and are confident that he will do a great job as Competition Director.

I would also like to recognize Ryan Brown for his faithful service over the years for developing the problems for the competition. Ryan and Chris Merrill have worked on room scheduling and securing our place at Illinois State University in Turner Hall over the past several years. Chris has also worked to see that the teachers have an opportunity to give feedback during the competition. I would also like to thank the entire board for filling in where needed to ensure that everything ran smoothly.

I want to also extend a special thank you to the 19 Regional Directors who host the regional competitions and all the efforts you put forth. Truly all this could not happen without all the hard work that is put forth by all the dedicated individuals that choose to get involved, especially the teachers who pour themselves into their students- Thank you.

As we look ahead to next year, please mark your calendars for the Annual Fall Workshop and Conference November 11th and 12th. Have a great summer vacation and come back in the fall with the same interest and enthusiasm that makes your drafting programs so successful.

Chip Finck, I.D.E.A. President

I would like to thank those people who have posted CAD/drafting instructor job openings on our web site this year. I have had several people thank me and tell me they got their new jobs because of our web site! Please remember to let us know of openings as you retire, change schools or move on. The Navy drafting patch heading up this page is to honor both of my children, Kendra and Trevor, who went into the Navy this year. God bless our troops!

Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
