| Once again, the IDEA High School Drafting Contest was a great success. The 26th annual event was held at Illinois State University on April 26, 2003, in Turner Hall. There were a promising number of entrants that qualified and attended this year's contest. In all, 1,024 students from 6 divisions and 19 reqions across the state competed. Two hundred and fifty-three students qualified to compete at the state level where 36 placed. | |
This year we saw the following numbers of entries: 139 Introductory Board, 253 Introductory CAD, 78 Machine Board, 197 Machine CAD, 110 Architectural Board and 247 Architectural CAD. The overall numbers in the contest were comparatively the same as in previous years with the exception of the Machine Board Division. This category dropped in number for the third consecutive year going from 97 in 2000 to 78 this year which brings me to my next challenge as president. As 3-D solid modeling has become more prevalent at the high school level, do we create a new solid modeling division in the contest? With that, how do we facilitate this new category? Do we eliminate the Machine Board Division or simply make an addition to the contest? Logistically speaking, how do we administer the test? Space and computer availability will probably be the biggest concern followed by software preferences. Do we standardize the software or let each school competing in the contest help by supplying the one they use? These, and many other questions must be answered before this can become reality. I encourage your input. Please drop me a note at TBacak@D155.org. I will compile your thoughts and report them to the executive board at our meeting on June 6th. My goal, if the general membership agrees, is to have an experimental division in place with the near future.

Also, I would like to thank many people for their efforts in this year's well-run contest. A big thanks goes to Richard Johannsen as competition director. Outstanding performance Richard! Thank you goes to Ryan Brown for an awesome set of problems this year. Thanks Doc! A thanks goes to Chris Merrill for his encore performance in organizing the state competition site. Good doughnuts! I'd also like to express my thanks to all executive board members for their dilligent work behind the scenes this year. Last, but certainly not least, I'd like to say thank you to all 117 teachers and all parents for your dedication and effort.

We are still looking for two mystery Outstanding Drafting Educators from the years 1995 and 1996. Someone out there has to be able to help us fill in these last two blanks!
