..... I would like to thank everyone that has been involved with the organization in the past years. My first introduction to the organization was in the mid-1980’s when I was a drafting student (pre-CAD) at ISU. I can remember my instructors, Dr. Talkington and Dr. Lockwood inviting drafting students to visit the Holiday Inn for the conference, which I did; it was my first introduction to electronic pen plotters for the classroom. I can remember Dr. Andrews, who taught some of the technology education courses, encouraging students to join professional organizations. One of the other drafting instructors that I enjoyed was Mr. Claude Bell, a wonderful fellow who brought a lot of work experience into the classroom. When Mr. Bell retired he was replaced by a young man from Eastern Kentucky with a wonderful disposition, Dr. Ryan Brown. Dr. Brown was given the duty of advancing the drafting department at ISU into the age of computers. As I proceeded into graduate courses, I had the opportunity to watch and be apart of that advancement for a period of time.

..... Dr. Brown was instrumental with keeping me involved in the organization, inviting me to judge at the state competition during the mid-1990’s. I have always been amazed at the excitement that comes into Turner Hall each April as over 300 state drafting qualifiers compete in an event that leaves an indelible impression on the high school students involved. Two examples, I was the best man for a friend of mine, who while in high school at Chicago Vocational qualified for the competition and to this day he says that it was instrumental for him in choosing ISU as the college he would attend. He now is a successful engineering technician, with an interior design degree from ISU. A former student of mine at HCC, qualified for the state competition while he was a student at Normal Community HS. His high school instructor happened to be Dave Schippert, who I had attended ISU with. I later hired this student to work with me in the design department of the company I was working for at that time. Both of these former qualifiers never forget to tell me how proud they were to be involved in the competition. Now, just think if you multiply that feeling by the 500 or more competitors that have been involved in the competition for the last 30 years. I think the drafting competition instills a sense of pride in all those that are involved, at all levels.

..... In speaking of the competition, there are several people over the years that have been involved that have guided the competition and kept improving it into what it is today. I can remember attending board meetings and listening to Jim Peterson bellow instructions to the other members on the board, making certain they knew their duties for competition day. Other competition directors over the years have made their own contributions and have been great caretakers for the organization: Steve Scheurman, Dr. Richard Knudsen, Richard Johannsen, Mike Soehn and Bill Kolton. These gentlemen deserve our thanks and our hope they realize their real reward is the thought of knowing how many students’ lives they have impacted.

..... I have always enjoyed attending meetings on the board for this organization and getting to know the people involved. I believe we have had some very devoted educators who commit countless hours to ensure that things run smoothly. I also feel we have had a nice mix of characters that have left their legacy behind: Dan Snyders, Steve Scheurman, Howard Miller, Louis Torres, Kevin Koeppen, John Conolly, Mark Anderson and Tom Schonauer, just to name a few.
| |
..... I want to take a moment to extend much appreciation to Tom Schonauer for everything that he has contributed to the organization over the years. I know that the I.D.E.A is a much better organization for what he has offered in support over the years. Thanks Tom!

..... As we approach our 50th Annual Conference, My hope is that we can honor the past and focus on what the future might hold for our organization. I believe we have a board and membership that is strong enough to see our profession advance even further as technology develops.
| |
Thanks, I can’t wait for the next 50!

Regards,

.....Every year I try to make a special contribution to each IDEA President. My contribution to Randy in our IDEA 50th year was a press release I did over the summer to over 20 Illinois newspapers throughout the state.
| I encourage other IDEA members to write their local papers as well. We have a lot to be proud of! Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
