Message from the President

On behalf of the entire I.D.E.A. Executive Board, I would like to welcome you to the 49th Annual Illinois Drafting Educator's Association Fall Conference!

I would like to thank the numerous people involved in making this conference a success. These include the I.D.E.A. Executive Board, who have put in countless hours preparing for Thursday and Friday. I would also like to acknowledge the various venors who year-in and year-out contribute to the success of this organization. I would like to acknowledge Illinois State University and Heartland Community College for graciously allowing us to use their facilities. Finally, I would like to thank all of the wonderful presenters who have volunteered their time to share some of their knowledge and expertise in the field of drafting and design.

Four years ago Tim Bacak, who was president of the I.D.E.A. at the time, asked me if I wanted to join the Executive Board. Before that point, I was an active member of the I.D.E.A. having students compete in the drafting competitions and using the I.D.E.A. website frequently for curriculum and links to drafting related websites. I figured becoming an Executive Board member would be a good opportunity to grow as a professional. I took him up on his offer and with the general membership's approval, I became their Member-At-Large of the I.D.E.A.

I look back on these past four years and I am amazed at what I have learned from this experience. I have learned from others on the board what it means to be a true professional. I am humbled by the knowledge the members of this organization possess. I have learned that professional relationships can grow into lifelong friendships. And I have learned that four hour meetings, like the ones that Bacak used to run, are just way too long! (Sorry Tim, it has been bugging me for four years). It has been a tremendously fun and rewarding experience, but most importantly and very simply, it has made me a better teacher!

I would recommend the opportunity of becoming a board member to any of our active members and if you would be interested in serving the I.D.E.A. in any capacity, I would be glad to help you see that it happens!

Finally, I would like to say that it has been an honor and a pleasure serving as a board member of this wonderful organization, and I will cherish the knowledge and the friendships I have gained from this experience for the rest of my life!

We need our regional directors and high school drafting educators to check the names and schools of their regional areas of our MEMBERS page to make sure it is kept current. If you see a name of a retiree or someone who has moved elsewhere, please inform me!

We also need to be made aware of job openings as those of us plan to enter into retirement. One of the greatest benefits of our organization is the communications of this website and things posted for sale and jobs are much appreciated by others!

Those of us having students who wish to buy used CAD or drafting equipment are well advised to check out eBay and CraigsList.

Mark Schwendau, IDEA Webmaster
