Message from the President

I hope your 2005-06 school year is progressing well after a restful summer. The IDEA board has been working hard to present to you an excellent 2005 Annual IDEA Conference. Mark your calendars and get those travel request forms turned into the administration so you can attend the conference on November 10-11, 2005. We have a great lineup for Thursday at Illinois State University and Friday at Heartland Community College.

.

The Thursday, November 10th conference will be held at ISU's Turner Hall with registration starting at 8:00 a.m. J.C. Malitzke jump starts us off by presenting the "New Features in AutoCAD 2006". After lunch we have more great breakout sessions to choose from. Some examples are:

* Timed AutoCAD Projects with video solutions - Jeff & Jerry Bartel
* AutoCAD 2006, What should we really be teaching in our classrooms? - J.C. Malitzke
* Revit: Interactive Demo - Imaginit Technologies
* AutoCAD 2006, Most compelling features for educators. - J.C. Malitzke

Don't forget the IDEA social on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Chateau! Be there to network, interface, and socialize with other educators from around the state!

Friday, November 11th, the conference moves to Heartland Community College on 1500 W. Raab Road in Normal. There is a new time schedule for the Friday session. The first speaker session will start a little earlier at 8:30 a.m. We still have nine presenters as usual, but all three sessions will be completed before lunch at 12:45. The business meeting will immediately follow lunch and hopefully send you on your way home soon after.

I am looking for feedback on a very sudden and serious issue facing many of us CAD educators. Some of us are being threatened by institutional IT directors with the loss of control of our CAD labs. In my college, as an example, the IT director wants to not only take control of the inventory of our CAD software but make himself responsible for its upgrade installations and lock the systems down to prevent customization by instructors and students.

I view this not only as a violation of my academic freedom but a violation of the Carl D. Perkins act our CAD workstations were purchased under. That act states, in part, the purpose of the act is to, "Provide students with strong experience in, and understanding of, all aspects of industry." It further states the act's intent is to, "Develop, improve, or expand the use of technology."

For those of us teaching some forms of CAD customization and management in rural areas with Mom & Pop businesses having no director of IT, this power play for control of our labs could prove to be detrimental to our programs. In many instances, our CAD college graduates wear two hats of CAD designer and IT manager!

I would like to hear what the IDEA membership has to say on this hot topic. I am angry!
