Welcome back from what I hope was a great summer. I hope your school year
is off to a great start. Hopefully by now the schedule changes have stopped,
broken equipment has been fixed, and you have memorized all the new students
names and remember the ones from last year. As the year begins to get more
hectic, with meetings and extracurricular activites and sports, family and
friends, remember to have November 11th and 12th marked in your schedule for
the IDEA Fall Workshop. Once again we have a great line up for you this
year. The executive board has been hard at work planning this event keeping
in mind all the great suggestions that were brought forth at last year's
conference. Your suggestions greatly influence our scope and were much
appreciated.

On Thursday November 11th we will be meeting at Illinois State University in
Turner Hall for several great hands-on CAD User's Group workshops. The day
will conclude with the Past President's Reception at the Chateau in Bloomington
(formerly known as Jumers) hosted by Tim Bacak. Friday's general Fall Workshop
will be held at Heartland Community College where we have several breakout
sessions, a luncheon, and our annual general membership meeting.

The response from the Curriculum Exchange from last year was very positive. We
will plan on having the Curriculum Exchange again this year so feel free to
bring your ideas/projects to share with others. Plan to bring 50 copies of
your projects with a description of how the project is used in class to share
with others.

I also want to remind you to please make preparations to be part of this year's
State Drafting Competition to be held on April 16th and with the regional
competition to be held on March 4th. In addition to our regular divisions,
this year we will be adding a new solid modeling division to the competition.
Please make it a point to encourage others who have not been involved in the
past competitions to get involved this year. To find out more about the
competitions, check out the competition page on our web site at:

| As president of the IDEA, it brings me great pleasure to inform you all the great things that are happening like the Fall Conference where we have almost 200 drafting educators attending from throught the state. The topics from the conference have ranged from sharing different projects used in the classroom by our colleges, the latest and greatest of what's new by industry professionals, to mapping using GPS, to building solid modeling using Rapid Prototyping technology. In addition to the specialized conference geared toward drafting teachers, we as a state organization, hold a state drafting competition where we had 962 students compete at the regional level and 196 compete at the state level last year. To my knowledge, we are the only state drafting organization in the country. I think that says a lot to our commitment to our students and profession. | ||||||||||||||||||
| As president of the IDEA, it is always nice to focus on the positive, but I must also address some growing concerns. During my tenure on the board, we have had four members resign. This trend is quite serious. Fortunately, we have had past board members step in and take over the responsibilites and duties. I am so thakful for those who have given over and above in this way. I am calling on you, our members, to get involved in the organization and to encourage others to also get involved. We need your help. If you know of someone who would be willing to take on the commitment and responsibility of being on the board, please contact me or one of the IDEA Board members. I hope that we, as a team, can work together in correcting this trend to see that the IDEA prospers in the years to come. | ||||||||||||||||||
| I strongly encourage you to make that commitment. | ||||||||||||||||||

The month of October I had an article published in Tech Directions on viewing
CAD drawings on the Internet. I am proud to make mention of our organization
in this publication! I hope to see you all at our Fall Workshop where I will
have my 50 color copies of my submission for the Curriculum Exchange. Special
thanks to my editor, Susanne Peckham. Susanne wishes us all well and encourages
new teachers to subscribe to "Tech-Directions" through their web site! The page
graphic for this month is my recent eBay.com purchase of the Hummel figurine,
"The Little Architect", retail value of this collectable is nearly $300. That
is not what I paid though... LOL
